Group No.2: Summary of our Case Study

The Science of Social Media Timing – Social Networks

Group  (Gisung Na, Hannes Forster, Julia Huber)

“The Science of Social Timing – Social Networks”

Was about percentages and dates for the usage of Social Networks in Business

1. According to this research, in general, what is the best time of the day to Tweet and why?

- The best time to tweet is noon or 6pm

- The reason is, that a lot of people have their lunch break during noon, so they can go online with their smartphones. Another time is 6pm, because a lot of peoples’ work finishes during 5pm-7pm and so when they come home from work, they can go online and tweet or read comments.

2. What is “CTR”?

According to this research, what is the “ideal” frequency of Tweets per day?
What are the best days?
Why do you suppose this might be true?
What are some possible reasons or products in which this would not be the case?

- CTR – Click through rate

- There are around 1-4 Tweets per hour. This means there could be 24 to 96 Tweets per day. (1*24=24; 4*24=96)

- They best days to Tweet are Midweek and Weekends

- This might be true, because a lot of people have smartphones so they can be online whenever they want to. Another reasons could be, that they days are Saturday and Sunday, because the most people do not work on the Weekends. For Midweek one point could be, that there is more work at the beginning and ending of the week, so workers have more time to be online and can go home earlier on Wednesday

- Products, where Tweets and Social Media do not work could be, for example long decision taking products or more expensive ones. When products are more complex and you need more service, you also choose other channels than the Internet.

3. What are the best times to share on Facebook?

And how many posts are there as a general rule per day (per week)?

-Like Twitter, the best time to post is noon and around 7pm. The day is Saturday, because a lot of people are off from work and have time to post.

- There are 0.5 posts per day (1 post every 2 days) and this is 3.5 posts per week. So you can think about how many posts some persons are doing every day, because there are so many, who are never posting and so the average is about 0.5 posts per day

4. What does the research say about time zone?

What was their big take-away on this?

How might this be relevant to companies on the West-coast as in California?

What are some reasons why West-coast companies might take this into consideration and what are some reasons why West-coast companies might choose to “ignore” this advice?

- You have to think about the different time zones in the world, because they are time lags between the several continents. You also have to notice, where your customers are from and when they are online.

- The biggest take-away was, that they noticed that 80% of the US population is in the Eastern and Central Time Zone, so only 20% are on the West-coast. So there main consumers do not live on the West-coast.

-  The companies have to think about, what people they want to reach and when the perfect time is in their time zone.

- Companies can ignore this, when they do not need to reach people from this time zone, so for them it is only important, what people from the companies time zone think, because they are not global or they do not deliver things around the world.

 Homework 2

Why is social media an important part of an organization’s marketing strategy?

As the Internet and especially social media becomes more and more common in the world wide web it gets in the focus of companies trying to take advantage of this huge pool of information! It's a great way to use social media as a tool of promotion, which is a huge part of the marketing mix! Think of the enormous amount of money companies are spending for advertising in the Super Bowl. Millions of dollars for a few seconds of advertising in the halftime break. And now think of a network as Facebook where 700 million users could possible see your advertising by a relatively small amount. I think the choice where to spend your money is clear. If you now know that the Internet and the number of people accessing it grows day by day it becomes even more valuable for companies! And this is not the end amazon for example has a profile for every customer if you go to there website they show you a personalized offer based on your earlier purchases and your search via there search engine. They use there Internet search engine as a complete marketing mix machine!

Why is it important to market yourself?

You can have the best product in the market the newest technologie to build your product and the best employees but do not sell one piece! If nobody knows your campany and your product exist nobody will buy it. Due to this fact it is very important that you build up your brand and become awared on the market you want to sell your stuff. You can reach this goal by beeing represented at a trade fair or contacting potential customers. There are so many ways for a company to make thier name in the market but I think an upcoming and very attractive way is using social media. Nowhere in the world you can reach customers more easy than using the internet!

How can you build your brand online?

I think the easiest way to build your brand online is using social media by advertising in some social networks. Nowhere in the world you will meet so many customers in one place. If they enjoy a product they will share it with their friends which could lead their friends to share it with another group of people. This could lead to a massive spread all over the internet! A good example of this way to reach people is the figt against the warlord Kony in Uganda! After posting a video of his crimes on 5th of march this year via facebook the viewers count is now 79.277.982. This shows the power of multinational networks.

Another way could be search engine optimization. Over 80 percent of the internet users begin their search by using one the search engines like google, yahoo, bing etc. Due to this fact it is very important to place your companies website in the first 10 places on the search engine ranking page! Google as the worlds biggest search engine provides you with two ways to reach this goal, one way is paying for google adwords the other option is the earlier metioned search engine optimization where you optimize your internet site to get part of the natural ranking.
